Alvin Chau trial to get underway on 2 September

A first court appearance in a trial against 21 suspects, including Suncity CEO Alvin Chau, will be held on 2 September, according to a report by TDM Radio Macau.

The group was arrested late last year for alleged criminal association, illegal gambling and money laundering, with Chau one of a number subsequently transferred to Coloane Prison to await trial in late November 2021.

The TDM Radio Macau report said the amount of money involved in alleged illegal betting activities is more than HK$800 billion.

As previously reported by Inside Asian Gaming, Macau’s Public Prosecutions Office (MP) had issued indictments against the 21 suspects in May, with a source claiming the indictment contained a significant amount of evidence.

The arrest of Chau last year ultimately saw Suncity officially announce the cessation of its junket business in early December, while Chau also stepped down as Chairman of the listed company of the same name, Suncity Group, which holds significant interests in integrated resort developments in Vietnam, Russia and the Philippines.
