Crown Melbourne to train 1,000 workers to join local hospitality industry

Crown Melbourne is set to train up 1,000 hospitality workers at its local learning center, Crown College, as part of efforts to help fill a skills shortage in Victoria’s hospitality industry due to COVID-19 lockdowns.

Established in partnership with the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Australian Hotels Association (Victoria), the scheme will not only offer free training to the 1,000 successful candidates but also pay them while they learn. Crown said it aims to have all training complete by July 2022, at which time individuals will be matched with businesses in need of skilled workers.

“COVID-19 has been incredibly hard on hospitality,” said Crown Melbourne Executive General Manager Food and Beverage, Enda Cunningham.

“The skill standard right across our industry ultimately benefits us all, and with the scale that we have at Crown and our training facilities – we are proud to be able to contribute and help the industry get back on track by skilling up a thousand workers.”

Crown said the course will include the fundamentals of hospitality including food and beverage fundamentals, customer service, crockery and cutlery, handling and polishing, order taking, docket writing, service sequencing and cocktail making.

Melbourne achieved an unwanted record earlier this month when it officially overtook Beunos Aires as the most locked down city in the world during the COVID-19 pandemic at more than 250 days. Restrictions under the current lockdown, which has stretched past four months, are due to start easing this Thursday after the state vaccination rate reached 70%.
