Crown Melbourne closes again as Australia’s casinos battle relentless COVID headwinds

Australia’s casino operators continue to face COVID-19 headwinds, with Crown Melbourne announcing Friday that it would suspend all gaming activities, plus most F&B and conferencing facilities, for at least the next seven days in response to another statewide lockdown.

This latest closure means Crown Melbourne is one of four major casinos Australia-wide to have been closed over the weekend, alongside all three of Star Entertainment Group’s properties: The Star Sydney, The Star Gold Coast and Treasury Brisbane.

Star had initially closed its two Queensland properties for three days from 31 July but confirmed last week that the closure period had been extended until 8 August. It was expected both properties would reopen from Monday, subject to restrictions, with Queensland confirming it would lift its lockdown restrictions despite seven more cases of COVID-19 emerging on Sunday.

The Star Sydney has been closed since 25 June as Sydney battles Australia’s largest outbreak, with 262 cases of community transmission on Sunday.

SkyCity Entertainment Group has been less effected in recent months although it did suspend operations at SkyCity Adelaide for four days last month after the South Australian government imposed a short “circuit breaker” lockdown.
