Sikkim casinos closed again as daily COVID numbers surge

Just two weeks after casinos in the Indian state of Sikkim were granted permission to reopen, they’ve been forced to close again due to an increase in new COVID-19 case numbers.

Having fallen below 100 daily cases late last month, new cases this week soared back to almost 300 with the government responding by reintroducing a ban on all social, religious and entertainment gatherings for the next month.

In a filing, India’s largest gaming company Delta Corp confirmed the closure of its Sikkim casino, Casino Deltin Denzong at the Denzong Regency hotel in Gangtok, until further notice, adding that it was unable to quantify the extend of financial losses.

The company also reported this week the ongoing suspension of operations in Goa, where it operates three offshore casinos and the Deltin Suites hotel. Goa’s casinos have been closed for four months now due to India’s swelling COVID numbers.

However, daily case numbers in Goa have fallen from more than 4,000 in early May to just 99 as of 19 July.
