Kangwon Land allowed to almost double capacity from today

The only South Korean casino at which locals are allowed to gamble, Kangwon Land, has been granted permission to increase its capacity under a pilot social distancing plan introduced by the government.

Under the plan, which aims to gradually ease the country back to normality following a major outbreak late last year that spread into the first few months of 2021, Kangwon Land can increase the number of guests from 1,200 to 2,300 as of Tuesday 15 June.

The casino has been reopened since 15 February, having been forced to close its doors on 8 December. It had also suspended casino operations twice previously in 2020, having only reopened in mid-October before closing again at the end of the year.

An official from Kangwon Land said, “As Jeongseon-gun (county) is included in the pilot application area of the social distancing reform plan, the number of people staying at the casino has been decided at 2,300 from 1oam on the 15th after consultation with the relevant department.”

South Korea reported 399 cases of COVID-19, down from a peak of over 1,200 in late December.
