Former National Treasurer and now Education Secretary Leonor M. Briones is all praise for Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso whose concern for the welfare of public-school children in his city is one of the most sincere in recent years.
In a broadcast interview, Briones said Moreno called the Department of Education for the purpose of coordinating the city’s education program with that of the DepEd.
According to Briones, Moreno needed to mesh his blended learning program for school children across the city with the national curriculum and ensure the educational tools he plans to purchase for the purpose is not wasted.
Moreno previously rejected in-person learning and opted for the blended learning method consistent with the need to keep Manila residents as healthy as possible even under pandemic conditions.
Briones said Moreno inquired and sought guidance on the nature or specification of learning devices the city will purchase for its students and ensure these meet the standard set by the DepEd.
The DepEd, Briones said, will announce within the week the specification of gadgets and devices that local government executives like Moreno may purchase for online learning purposes.
Briones said there are tablets and computers available in the market from which LGU executives may choose for their students.
Moreno previously announced the city government has set aside P900 million for the purchase of at least 110,000 tablets and 10,000 laptops for the use of public-school students from kindergarten to Grade 12 and teachers, respectively, including pocket wi-fis.
Moreno had specified the prospective supplier of the learning devices must have enough service centers to cover the warranty in case of defects or malfunction.
He said the devices form part of city property and returned once the students are done using them, so that others may use them too.
