Mutual recognition between Macau and Hong Kong’s “health code” systems postponed

Macau and Hong Kong have paused negotiations over mutual recognition of their respective “health code” systems following fears that a third wave of COVID-19 pandemic has struck Hong Kong.

Hong Kong has recorded more than 60 new cases of COVID-19 via community transmission over the weekend, with officials concerned the number of cases is set to keep rising. As a result, negotiations over the resumption of some normal border policies with Guangdong Province and Macau will have to wait until the situation stabilizes.

Macau’s Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Ao Ieong U, admitted that the progress for mutual recognition of the health code system between Macau and Hong Kong had to be postponed.

Meanwhile, as the vice president of the CPPCC, Edmund Ho Hau-wah, and the Secretary for Economy and Finance, Lei Wai Nong, attended Dr Stanley Ho’s funeral in Hong Kong last week, both will now enter mandatory 14-day quarantine.

Lei will undergo quarantine in an appointed quarantine hotel, while Ho will be quarantined at an undisclosed venue due to concerns over security.
